Three taxes stack on one cannabis sale
When we ring up an adult-use sale, three separate taxes go on top of the sale price. The Department of Revenue Services (DRS) lists all three on its cannabis tax page.
- State sales and use tax, 6.35%. It applies to each cannabis sale that carries the statewide cannabis tax.
- Municipal cannabis tax, 3.0%. It is figured on the gross receipts from cannabis sales, per DRS.
- Statewide cannabis tax, 10.75%. A flat 10.75% of gross receipts from adult-use cannabis sales, in effect from October 1, 2026.
Per the DRS rates above, the 6.35% sales tax, the 3.0% municipal tax and the 10.75% statewide tax add up to 20.1% of the sale price.
Tax is one piece of the rules that come with every purchase. Our guide to Connecticut cannabis laws in 2026 covers the rest of what the state allows.
A $22.00 shelf price, step by step
DRS works through a $22.00 sale on its cannabis tax page. Here is that example, one line at a time.
- Start with the sale price: $22.00.
- Add the 6.35% sales tax: $1.40.
- Add the 3.0% municipal cannabis tax, per DRS: $0.66.
- Add the 10.75% statewide cannabis tax: $2.37.
- Pay the total: $26.43.
The three tax lines come to $4.43, and each one is figured on the $22.00 sale itself, not on a subtotal that already includes another tax.

The old per-milligram system is history
Before October 1, 2026, the statewide cannabis tax was based on milligrams of THC, not on price. The old rates, listed in chapter 214c of the General Statutes, were:
- Plant material: 0.625 cents per milligram of total THC
- Edible products: 2.75 cents per milligram of total THC
- Other cannabis: 0.9 cents per milligram of total THC
Under that schedule, the tax on an item depended on its category and how many milligrams of total THC it held, so two items at the same price could carry different tax.
Since October 1, 2026, the statewide tax is a flat percentage of the sale, so the price sets the amount. Any article, receipt or calculator that still works in cents per milligram is describing the old system.
Estimate your own total with the calculator
The calculator on this page estimates a total from the shelf price you enter.
Once you know roughly what a cart will come to, order from our Derby store, which takes scheduled delivery orders through its live menu, or plan on in-store pickup at our Hartford store.
Product prices live on the menu and current offers on our deals page, since both change more often than tax law does.
Who pays the same rate and who is exempt
Where you live does not change the tax. The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) says in its answer for out-of-state buyers that non-residents are charged the same state and local taxes as Connecticut residents for adult-use cannabis.
Medical program sales are taxed differently. Under chapter 214c, the state cannabis tax and the municipal cannabis tax do not apply to the sale of cannabis for palliative use, and under chapter 219 those sales are also exempt from sales tax.
A hybrid retailer may sell medical marijuana products to qualifying patients and caregivers as well as adult-use cannabis. Both our stores are licensed adult-use cannabis retailers, not hybrid retailers.
Questions shoppers ask about Connecticut cannabis tax
Can I buy if I live in another state?
Yes. DCP says any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID may buy from licensed adult-use retailers or hybrid retailers regardless of state of residence.
Is there a daily purchase limit?
Yes. Under state law, a retailer or hybrid retailer may not knowingly sell a consumer more than one ounce of cannabis or the equivalent in products per day.
