What you can buy at the counter in one day
The first limit you meet is the one at our counter, and it is the smallest of the three. State law says a retailer or hybrid retailer shall not knowingly sell a consumer more than one ounce of cannabis or the equivalent in products per day, and the law defines a consumer as someone 21 or older. Flower bought by the eighth or the quarter counts toward that ounce, and our page on eighth, quarter and half-ounce weed weights shows how the sizes add up before you choose from our flower selection.
The ounce is fairly new. A DCP notice dated July 1, 2025 raised the adult-use per-transaction limit to one ounce effective July 30, 2025, and you can read the Department of Consumer Protection notice to licensed stores yourself. The same notice answers the question people ask next: a consumer may not buy more than one ounce per day per customer regardless of the number of transactions. Two smaller purchases on the same day share that one ounce.
Public Act 26-8, effective October 1, 2026, keeps the one ounce per day retail limit for consumers. The commissioner may also set temporary lower per-transaction limits to address a supply shortage or public health concern. For the legal picture beyond these numbers, start with our guide to Connecticut cannabis laws in 2026. Growing plants at home is a separate allowance, covered in our page on home grow rules.
What you can carry on your person
Once you walk out the door, a second and larger limit applies. A person 21 or older may possess one and one-half ounces of cannabis plant material on their person. That number comes from chapter 420b of the General Statutes, which also holds the conversion rules for everything that is not flower.
The carry limit counts everything on you, not only the bag from today. Under the statute, the amount possessed is calculated by converting cannabis products to their plant-material equivalent and taking the sum. So an ounce from our counter plus half an ounce already in your jacket reaches the one and one-half ounce limit.
Concentrates and other products: the equivalents table
Flower is counted by weight. Concentrate is counted by weight too, at a far smaller number, and other cannabis products, edibles and drinks among them, are counted by the milligrams of THC they contain. For possession limits, one ounce of cannabis plant material equals five grams of concentrate or other cannabis products with up to five hundred milligrams of THC. The table applies that conversion to the two possession limits.
| Possession limit | Plant material (flower) | Concentrate | Other cannabis products |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carried on your person | 1.5 oz | 7.5 g | Up to 750 mg of THC |
| Locked at home, or in a locked glove box or trunk | 5 oz | 25 g | Up to 2,500 mg of THC |
Mixed amounts add up through that plant-material equivalent. Two and a half grams of concentrate counts as half an ounce of flower, and 250 milligrams of THC in edibles counts the same. Because concentrate converts at five grams to the ounce, a few grams from our concentrate shelf use more of the carry limit than the same weight of flower. For the daily purchase, the cap is one ounce or the equivalent in products, so ask at the counter how a mixed order counts toward it.
Edibles run on milligrams. Under DCP rules, edibles can have no more than 100 milligrams of THC total in a multiple-serving package, so five packages at that maximum hold 500 milligrams, the possession equivalent of one ounce. Our THC drinks follow the same arithmetic: effective October 1, 2026, a retailer infused beverage may contain up to ten milligrams of THC per container, and each container adds to the milligram total.
Where five ounces can be stored
Home is where the largest limit applies. A person 21 or older may keep five ounces of cannabis plant material in a locked container at their residence or in a locked glove box or trunk of their motor vehicle. In concentrate, that home limit equals twenty-five grams, or products with up to 2,500 milligrams of THC.
If you rent, landlords may prohibit smoking and vaping at home but generally may not prohibit possession or consumption of other forms of cannabis. Where you can light up outside the home is a separate question, answered in our guide to where you can legally smoke weed in Connecticut.
Visitors from out of state follow the same limits
Living in another state does not change the carry limit. The same 1.5 oz possession limit applies to out-of-state residents as to Connecticut residents.
There is no residency requirement for adult-use purchases, and any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID may buy from licensed adult-use retailers or hybrid retailers regardless of state of residence. The full answer is in DCP's guidance for shoppers who live out of state. Non-residents are charged the same state and local taxes as Connecticut residents, and our cannabis tax explainer breaks those down.
If you are staying the night, hotels and motels must prohibit smoking and vaping cannabis in any location but may not prohibit legal possession or consumption in nonpublic areas. Our guide for out-of-state residents buying in Connecticut covers the rest of the visit.
Questions shoppers ask about possession limits
When did carrying cannabis become legal in Connecticut?
Possession of up to 1.5 oz became fully legal on July 1, 2021, according to DCP.
Do registered patients have a higher limit?
Yes. Qualifying patients and caregivers may carry up to 5 ounces of cannabis flower or its equivalent. Our Derby and Hartford stores hold adult-use retailer licenses, so the one-ounce daily cap applies to every sale at our counters.
Order ahead, bring your ID, and plan the day's purchase
Choose your products on the Derby live menu or the Hartford live menu before you head over, and keep the order at or under one ounce of flower or its equivalent. You can also browse everything we carry by category first.
Bring ID that shows you are 21 or older. State law lets a person 21 or older use a motor vehicle operator's license or an identity card with a full-face photograph as legal proof of age.
