An eighth is 3.5 grams, and the rest of the scale follows from it
If you are shopping flower at Hi! People, the eighth, the quarter and the half ounce are the sizes to know. The state's Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) counts a half ounce as 14 grams for adult-use purchases by adults 21 and older, and halving that number gives you the quarter and then the eighth.
| Size | Share of an ounce | Weight in the state's count |
|---|---|---|
| An eighth | 1/8 | 3.5 grams |
| A quarter | 1/4 | 7 grams |
| A half ounce | 1/2 | 14 grams |
The exact figure for a full ounce comes from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Its guide to the metric system, NIST Special Publication 1020, gives the conversion factor: multiply ounces by 28.349523125 to get grams. Half of 28.349523125 is a little more than 14, so the state's 14-gram half ounce is a whole-gram count just under the exact half.
Half an ounce in Connecticut is 14 grams, in any combination
The DCP spells it out in its news release explaining how a half ounce is counted: any combination up to 14 total grams equals 1/2 ounce.
The same release uses pre-rolls to show it. Fourteen pre-rolls of 1 gram each make a half ounce, and so do 28 pre-rolls of 0.5 grams each.
Flower sizes add up the same way. Two eighths and a quarter, 3.5 plus 3.5 plus 7 grams, also reach 14 total grams.
How the weights compare with the state's possession equivalents
The state's possession rules for adults 21 and older count more than flower, so chapter 420b of the Connecticut General Statutes sets equivalents that turn other formats into ounces of plant material.
| Plant material | Counts the same as |
|---|---|
| 1 ounce | 5 grams of concentrate or other cannabis products with up to 500 milligrams of THC |
| 1.5 ounces | 7.5 grams of concentrate or other cannabis products with up to 750 milligrams of THC |
The on-person limit itself is set out in our guide to Connecticut cannabis possession, which is the page to read before you carry a larger amount.
